Cats and Cowboys in advertising

I don’t know if people still use it, but the term video vampire is one I’ve heard a lot over the years. It refers to a TV idea that is so brilliant, it takes all the attention away from the advertiser. The spot may win a ton of awards, but nobody can remember who it was for. Which means, I’m afraid, that there’s an argument for viewing it as a failure.

This 2000 Super Bowl spot from Fallon McElligott is a classic example. It is so brilliantly funny and so well executed that I hate to find any fault with it at all. But the fact is that nobody could remember that EDS was the client. And I think you’ll agree that the supers at the end are working way too hard to make the link between the concept and the client. Pity.

But it was a huge award winner, and it’s still pretty wonderful, so enjoy.

Superheroes without raincoats

What is it with superheroes and ledges especially when it's raining?

Don't they know they could catch a cold? Or maybe it's part of their superpowers. I'd like to make a comic one day where it's not bullets that get beneath a superheroes skin but a mosquito. That's a good setup for a superhero story. Imagine an African Clark Kent who is not averse to krptonite but can't stand the anopheles mosquito.

Why did Mary Jane have to kiss when he's upside down. Couldn't he wait till the next scene when there's less of a chance that water will enter his nose?

How to Completely Overcome Impure Thoughts

Lust is purposefully dwelling on sinful, sensual thoughts. These are the wild horses of our mind which must be tracked down, captured, and made obedient to Christ.

So What's the Trouble with Impure Thoughts?

1. You will come to justify sin.

The Great Deceiver tells you, "Don't worry about these thoughts, they're harmless, innocent fantasies." He would like you to dismiss them as the ordinary musings of all humanity. This sometimes works. The human mind cannot survive long when our behavior is out of sync with our beliefs. If you believe something is wrong you will want to stop it. However, if you fail at your attempt to stop, you will then try to sanctify the thought, word, or deed. You justify it as appropriate, thus escaping the tension of doing what you know you shouldn't. If you do not beat this thing, eventually you'll simply justify lust as ordinary and inescapable.

2. You will live a double life.

If you are truly saved, the Holy Spirit won't abandon His convicting work. Though you tell yourself this sin is O.K. the Holy Spirit will keep telling you otherwise. You will then adopt a new strategy: you partition life like a roll-top desk. You decide to simply ignore this part of your life. You create a pigeonhole for impure thoughts pretending they don't exist.

Churches are full of men and women who live this kind of double life. They tuck their evil thoughts into a sealed desk drawer of their mind. Into this drawer they enter alone. These folk seem quite ordinary when you meet them, work with them, or serve on a committee with them. But they are a Jekyll-Hyde Christian. Though they grow in other areas, appearing to make progress along the highway of holiness, they have a cancerous closet in their mind. These double-minded Christians sneak off to their private closets of their minds. There they dwell on corrupt and sordid thoughts, then cower back full of guilt and despair. This is a wretched way to live.

3. Lustful thirst is unquenchable.

Sexual pursuits outside marriage is like an empty well. It promises satisfaction, leaving you unfulfilled. It is an unsatisfying pursuit. The more you dwell on these thoughts, the less exciting they will be for you. In your quest for fulfillment you will mount a perpetual treadmill of self gratification. The faster you chase satisfaction, the less satisfied you'll be. Like drinking salt water, the more you drink the less satisfied you'll be.

4. You will become obsessed.

Sexual fantasies are addictive. Once you establish the habit, you will begin a relentless cycle of obsession. These thoughts will gradually permeate every recess of your mind. They will dominate you, enslaving you in a bondage of despair. Eventually your entire life will be tarnished by them. You will be "hooked" on the opium of sexual fantasies. You will be obsessed with your quest for satisfaction -- always hungering, never satisfied. You will then be lust's slave.

5. Lust diverts wholesome sexual energy.

The devil didn't invent sex. God did. He termed it "good" along with the rest of creation. The most important sex organ in your body is your mind. God designed your mind with the powerful capacity to direct and focus sexual energy toward another. This remarkable mental ability is God-given and designed to produce the great sexual satisfaction in marriage. This God-given ability should be focused on your mate, not squandered on some fleeting fantasy. When you surrender to impure thoughts, you poke a leak in your own sexual energy, which ultimately produces frustration and unfulfillment.

6. Thoughts lead to action.

On this one concept philosophers and great thinkers throughout history agree: as you think, you shall become. If you think positive, uplifting, wholesome, healthy thoughts, you will eventually become a positive, healthy, uplifting person. If you think gloomy, negative, sickly thoughts, you will turn out to be a negative, sickly person. What we think, we become. As Jesus put it, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he."

Your mind is like a fertile field. A field doesn't care what you plant in it -- corn, oats, or wheat. It simply obeys the universal law: what you plant in the field, you'll get back in abundance. If you plant corn, you'll get corn. Wheat, wheat, and so on. Your mind is like this fertile field. Your thoughts are seeds. What you plant, will sprout and grow, eventually producing an abundant crop in real life.

Can you see the ultimate results of impure thinking? "Innocent fantasies" planted in your mind will eventually produce an abundant crop of sinful behavior. What you thought was a benign mental pastime carried on in the privacy of your mind will turn out to be the doorway through which your moral downfall enters. Thoughts lead to actions. Your sensual thought life will not escape this universal law of life. Sooner or later you will act as you think.

Ten Steps Out

How to Completely Overcome Impure Thoughts

If you have been enslaved by impure thoughts, there is good news for you. You can be free. Completely so! If you seriously hunger to be free from the bondage of impure thoughts, God is able to do it. He can!

The following are ten steps you can begin today. They are not some philosophy dreamed up in an ivory tower of theory. Rather, they have been hammered out in the trenches of life by hundreds of men and women who once suffered in defeat, but are now free of this "clinging" sin (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Though they are "steps" in one way, they are not to be considered completely sequential. Though there is a general arrangement of the order, each point must be continually maintained while others are added. Hundreds have followed these steps and found complete victory. You can too!

1. Confess.

All improvement starts with confession. Quit dismissing impure thoughts as inconsequential. Tear down the partition to that private closet in your mind, allowing Christ's light to expose these thoughts of darkness. Call them what God does: lust. Agree with God concerning this sin and begin your journey to a pure mind.

2. Expose lust's "big lie."

Admit to yourself and to God that this way of life does not bring the ultimate satisfaction. Acknowledge that the promises of the Deceiver are out-and-out lies. Lust is not satisfying. It never has been... never will be. Keep reminding yourself that the Devil is a liar from the beginning. Start remembering where all this "daydreaming" could eventually lead...to behavior, moral collapse, the break-up of your home.

3. Starve the sources.

Track down your stimuli and get tough with them! What is it that gets your mind going? Is it the "story section" of a woman's magazine? Is it a particular TV program? Videos? Soap Operas? Music? Is it a certain person who is flirting with you? Is it double-meaning kidding with someone? Is it "girlie magazines?" Do romance novels start your sexual engines? Is it indecent jokes or stories of another's sexual activities? What is the outside source of your temptation?

Your mind is fearfully and wonderfully made. It is incredible. Better than man's best computer, the mind is constantly receiving messages, processing input, and affecting your behavior. When you expose your mind to stimuli, it affects what you think. If your mind is wandering into sexual fantasies, somewhere along the line it has received stimuli which triggered these thoughts. Track down and avoid your besetting stimuli. "Be careful, little eyes, what you see."

If you were a rehabilitated alcoholic, you would have to learn to stay away from alcohol. If God had delivered you from drinking, would you drop into a bar just to check out how well God had delivered you? Would you order a beer and set it before you just to test your resistance? No! You would avoid alcohol in any form whatsoever.

So it is with lust. Lust is a hungry carnivorous monster. It must be fed "flesh" to survive. External stimuli trigger lust. These stimuli continuously nourish and multiply a lustful orientation. Since society is saturated with sexual stimuli, you may be tempted to play along -- simply giving up. But you need not do this. With a little thought you could make a list of the ten most dangerous "triggers" for temptation in this area. Then starve the sources.

4. Win with the Word!

How shall a young man keep his way pure? How will you keep from sinning against God? By hiding God's Word in your heart. A consistent habit of reading, memorizing and meditating on God's Word is incompatible with impure thoughts. One will eventually destroy the other. Which one wins in your life? (Consider Psalm 119:11... better yet, all of Psalm 119.)

A believer who is failing to live above impure thoughts will almost always confess he or she is not practicing a regular habit of systematic devotional Bible reading. The road to thought purity always runs through Scripture. The most important habit you can begin, to aid you in your battle against temptation, is a daily "Time Alone with God." If the devil is tempting you to lustful thoughts, start with these scriptures:

5. Practice "Displacement."

"An idle mind is the devil's workshop." If you have ample amounts of unoccupied time, you will be a "sitting duck" for Satan. If you are often alone, you may find Satan coming in like a flood during these times. Perhaps your job is boring and unchallenging, allowing time for your mind to wander -- and wonder. When a mind is unoccupied the devil takes this opportunity to suggest sinful thoughts for you to dwell on. What you do with his "pitches" will determine dour destiny!

Displacement is concentrating your mental energies on other things (cf. Philippians 4:8). It is filling up your brain with other thoughts, focusing your mental powers elsewhere. Impure thoughts are crowded out. Search for a mental infatuation with something else: baseball, scripture memorization, an invention you're working on, taking a class at the nearby college, a new floor plan for your "dream house." Anything decent will do. Find something which can occupy your mind, and displace impure thoughts.

6. Redirect your thoughts.

If you are married, you have already discovered that the temptation to impure thoughts does not pass with the wedding ceremony. In some ways it increases. But the married person has one definite counter force against this temptation: When you are tempted to think sexual thoughts, go ahead and think them. What? Yes. Rather than developing a negative obsession about these thoughts, redirect them properly. Where? Toward your mate. Use your sexual thoughts to enhance your own sex life in marriage. Focus your thoughts toward marriage -- toward that relationship where sexual expression is beautiful and God-sanctified. This is the wholesome use of your powerful mental sexual energies.

7. "Drink from your own spring."

If you are single, skip this one. If you are married, work on developing a satisfying sexual relationship at home. A developing sexual relationship takes tenderness, understanding, and patient hard work. Learn to flirt with each other again. Recapture the tremendous sexual power of that meaningful glance. Practice romance. Spend some money. Surprise her! Allure him! Keep the fire hot at home.

8. Turn temptation into spiritual energy.

Do a turnabout on the devil. When he introduces some delectable temptation to you, immediately go to prayer. Not for yourself, but for others. Take your temptation as a signal that Satan would love to have you fall so that he can more easily get at those in your circle of influence. What about your son? Daughter? People in your church? Someone you discipled? Spouse? Congregation? Could they be tempted likewise? Most likely they are. Thus go to prayer for them, that they will be strong in their similar temptation. This is a great trick to play on Satan. His temptation merely sends you to earnest prayer for others. The more he tempts you, the more you pray -- what a clever ploy! What a mighty ministry of intercessory prayer!

9. Become accountable.

You will doubtless never beat this one alone. Find someone of the same sex whom you trust, preferable someone who has fought this battle and won. In a few cases I have know of husband-wife accountability on thought-life, but often an accountability relationship with someone of the same sex is better. Ask him or her to check up on your thought life every time he or she sees you. Make sure they are tough on you, never satisfied with less than 100% purity.

10. Seek deliverance.

This sin is usually too powerful to beat by the first nine steps alone. If you carefully follow each of the above prescriptions you will find great victories and progress in your struggle. You will become an overcomer most of the time. You may say, "I've come a long way," but you are not completely free. You will still yearn for complete freedom. You want more than partial victory. You are not even satisfied with 100% "victory." You want deliverance (Romans 7:24-25a; 8:2-3).

You can have it. God carries deliverance in stock. You can do more than fight the battle -- often winning, sometimes losing -- "one step forward, then two steps backward." You can do more than resist the magnetic pull of the flesh.

True, you will likely not ever be totally delivered from temptation in this area (or at least related areas). But you need not fall. You need not be content with being a "recovering lust-aholic."

You can have deliverance. You'll never completely beat this thing through striving, though strive you must. You'll never defeat this clinging habit through hard work, though work you must. Only the "Strong Man" can bind this evil spirit of the mind. It is only the Son of Man who can drive these thieves from the temple of your heart. God can deliver you. And He will. If you let Him.

Now don't leap too quickly at this opportunity for a shortcut. Don't say to yourself, "Good, I'll seek instant deliverance... it's certainly easier than memorizing these Scriptures." God will see through your shallowness and spiritual laziness. He expects you to work. And as you work, He also works (Philippians 1:6; 2:13). So, as you pursue thought purity, also seek His total deliverance. He can do it. He has done it for many; He can do it for you!

It could happen today, or after many months or even years of seeking. It could happen gradually or it could occur in a single instant. But it can happen. There is not one sin which you can not be free of. God forgives. He also delivers. Let it happen!

Now what about you, my friend?

Do you suffer defeat in your thought life? Has lust plagued you for years? Have you almost given up hope of being free of this beast? Don't give in. Don't give up. Rather, cheer up! Look up! Your hope of deliverance is near. If His gentle Spirit convicts you of this sin, rejoice. For He never convicts without the hope of correction. Your conviction is cause for joy. There is hope. Beginning today. You can be free!

An Obii and Afrochic

Some posts you just read. Others you photocopy-internet style by reblogging. Obinna Chuku is an old friend and former partner from our MIG days. On June 11, he calls me and asks what the directions are to Esi's launch of AfroChic's new line. He got there and left before I did and then he blogged about the experience before I did. GRRRR! Met Adwoa Perbi for the first time that day. I read about her She comes from a strong Christian family of achievers and I didn't hesitate to pour fire truck sized flattery on her. No freebies were accorded afterwards though.lol. Esi is one of the most fun and intelligent people I've ever met. Did I mention what great advice she's given HTW?. I like AfroChic so it's no surprise that I jumped at the opportunity to work with William Hammah in creating some banners for their website. And now it's with great pleasure that I present Obii x Afrochic..happy reading

Everytime i've gone for a fashion show, it's more like an exhibition of the designer's creative whims and wild fabric-oriented fantasies than a presentation of clothes women would actually wear... in daylight. But in the two hours that i spent here, i saw all sorts of women breeze in and out. Size 2s... size 12s... and larger... and none of them left without buying at least one thing. And without sounding overly dramatic, there was something for everyone. There were fashionistas there, and there were "ordinary" women there.

AfroChic's founded and helmed by Adwoa Perbi and Esi Cleland, two extraordinary women in their own right. Esi's a GeyHey girl, the first in her family to go to Uni on a full scholarship to Smith College. She started off studying electrical engineering (switched to Physics because she found that more interesting... ) and then proceeded to Duke for her Masters.

Adwoa's an Akora. (i can literally hear the cheering) She's got a degree in Computer Science from Cornell and worked for Goldman-Sachs in New York and London before moving back to GH. Ya.

So it's safe to say starting up this fashion company wasn't an act of desperation.

Their passion is undeniable and AfroChic is becoming a big thing. Not just in terms of the market they're reaching out to but also in how they're doing it. Apart from their shop on the Legon campus, they sell most of their clothes via their online store. They take orders online and do doorstep deliveries. That's pretty awesome considering our addressing system... or lack of one.

"Online shopping is new here. It means we're having to teach people to use what we have developed like our size charts and our website. In some ways, it's exciting to be at the forefront of that."

These two come across as women with balls of steel but it's taken a lot of time and sacrifice to get to where they are, both quitting lucrative jobs to concentrate on AfroChic fulltime. They describe it as the dues to pay to live one's dreams.

"It's scary of course but Adwoa says that courage is not the absence of fear. It's the willingness to do it inspite of the fear. That's what she said when I was scared to quit my job. It didn't make things better. What I wanted to hear was that we were at the brink of pursuing this grand venture. That if we did it, it would be awesome."

And yes, it was brutal in the beginning. Yet, almost a year later... if not more, here they are and here AfroChic is. It's gained a steady reputation and a growing fanbase that actually actively patronizes their clothes and looks forward to new collections.

The thing i admire most about these guys (and by guys, i mean women...) is that they're single minded in what they aspire to be. They want to be a brand that's worn. Period. Worn here, in Lagos, Douala... wherever there are women who want to look good. That automatically puts everything from their pricing range to their marketing strategy in perspective.

"we want to be global but Africa is where we wish to begin. And we want AfroChic to be worn not just by a few rich people but by as many Africans as want to."

The brand promise for their consumers is simple. "Get Compliments..." It's remarkably strong and continues to guide their design and production efforts line after line. It's funny how you could pick up anything on sale and see how it fit that promise. African women like to look good. African men like their women to look good. If you can do that and still stay within a sensible and morally acceptable budget, you've cracked the brief. I think they have.

For me, it was hilarious fun to watch all these different women try clothes on and strut out with an excited grin on their faces, eager to hear their friends'/spouse's reaction. But you could see it, right there on their faces - the reassured glow of knowing that they looked good. It was interesting and slightly freaky. But that's the point.

As Esi puts it...

"When people choose AfroChic, they're choosing to reflect all that is remarkable about themselves. It's about clothing Africa from within... but Africans... we don't wear just anything, so only compliments will do."

In 1994, there was an ad slogan for a wood dye manufacturer that became very popular. It simply read "Does exactly what it says on the tin." And that's true in this case as well, because from what I saw, and the excited buzz around the company, AfroChic is doing exactly what it says on the tin.

Have only known the often humorous, blunt and business minded co-founder of the Golden Baobab Prize but since her idea to produce good quality African content is in line with so many things I'm doing right now I thought this would be a good time to plug this interview of her in Ideamensch.com(long sentence.whew!!. If you haven't heard of them, they've interviewed Craig Newmark, Matt Flannery and Seth Godin. That's some good company if you ask me.

Deborah Ahenkorah is the co-founder and executive director of the Golden Baobab Prize, a literary award that inspires African writers to create stories for young readers. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College where she started Project Educate In Africa, a student movement that promotes literacy and education in Africa. Deborah has recently been named one of Ghana’s leading social entrepreneurs by Playing for Change. She loves traveling and in the past 3 years has lived in different countries in 3 continents.

What are you working on right now?

My vision is to create a platform for identifying and nurturing talents to produce good quality African-inspired content that young people will relate to and enjoy! The first part of this has been establishing The Golden Baobab Prize, a literary award that encourages African writers to create stories for young readers. The award discovers gems of unpublished stories and we connect them with publishers in Africa and around the world. The Golden Baobab Prize serves a critical need in Africa by encouraging the production of good quality African children’s books that will ease reliance on foreign content for young readers in schools and libraries in Africa.

Trends that excite you?

Technological advancements: So technology just keeps getting better!! I remember a time when video calls were a thing that existed only in ‘The Jetsons’. Today I can sit under a tree in my house in Ghana and with a click SEE and chat live to my friend in say, oh I dunno, South Korea??! Blows my mind. And to think we’re only going to get more advanced. Brain Gain in Africa: Over history, the crème of Africa’s human resource has been lured away to other lands for economic means. In the past the exodus was involuntary, today people willingly leave the continent in droves to places they feel the grass can be greener and African development has suffered immensely for this. Being myself one of these voluntary migrants – left Ghana for college in the United States, now returned home – I’m wildly enthusiastic to see more and more people like me coming home. Most of these returnees come with grand dreams, inflated ideals and unbridled passion that is so infectious that even when they don’t realize their grandiose visions, they manage to effect a ton of change.

How do you bring ideas to life?

I pick a sheet of paper, create a to-do list and then get to working so that I can cross things of the list.

What inspires you?

Whenever my productivity lulls I connect with social entrepreneurs and listen to their passionate spiels on their causes and how they constantly bulldoze obstacles to reach wonderful results. It’s wonderfully energizing for me!

What is one mistake you’ve made, and what did you learn from it?

Don’t think you can do it all alone. Even if you can, with the support of a good team you will be faster and better.

What is one business idea that you’re willing to give away to our readers?

A budget airline that flies African destinations – get it right and you’ll be a billionaire.

What is one book and one tool that helps you bring ideas to life?

Book: I draw strength from the grand elaborate promises of the Bible. For Example: “You can do all things because Jesus gives you strength.” That statement makes me feel like superwoman everyday!

Tool: Google is the best thing invented since French toast.

How do you balance work and personal life?

Work-life balance has never been one of my strong points. Especially when I love my job so much, all I want to do is work! I’m trying to be better though so sometimes I take the day off and just read a good book in bed or I do long lunches at the beach with friends.

Where do you see your project in the next five years?

We will have African children’s books in stores all over the world and we will be signing a contract to produce our second African-inspired children’s animation.

The arrangement of oranges on a hawkers tray on the streets of Accra is art. The way the coconut seller dude cuts through the fibre to crack it open is art. Ahmed Tijay's paintings of local Ghanaian cooking utensils is art. Marcel Duchamp put toilets in museums, that's functional and necessary art. The patterns that are formed in concrete are art. If Art is a gift, then share your art.

What do the world’s fifth largest collection of Planet of the Apes memorabilia, a Japanese proverb about lukewarm water, and the Beastie Boys have in common? They are all related in one way or another to the underground brand A Bathing Ape (BAPE), brainchild of a sprightly designer, musician, and Tokyoite, who, like so many Japanese “superstars” (think Ichiro), goes by his given name: Nigo.

A visitor to Nigo’s latest installation, BAPE Café would be greeted by a ceiling mural of American 1950s-style pinups suggestively manipulating BAPE merchandise. Once inside one is completely enveloped in the BAPE brand. The BAPE logo, a blurry, psychedelic, shag-hair ape face, is everywhere. Coasters, napkins, tables, stools, chopstick sleeves, plates, the bill, and various nooks and crannies throughout the café are all ape-branded. The centerpiece is a giant, dark wood table cut in the shape of the logo replete with a recessed mirror image carved into the ceiling above. Even the toilet is BAPE-shaped.

Clearly Nigo has a bit of a grasp on this branding thing. There is a rigid consistency in the otherwise seemingly hip, laid-back personality of the brand. BAPE started as a clothing line, and every article personally handcrafted by Nigo has the ape logo carefully placed on it, sometimes in the most unexpected places. Even more crucial to BAPE’s brand success than consistency has been its “limited editions” strategy. The self-enforced scarcity of BAPE products and boutiques makes them more sought after among BAPE fans than De Beers diamonds.

The humble origins of this ape fetish fashion lie in the backstreets of trendy Tokyo neighborhood Harajuku, where 10 years ago Nigo launched his brand in an unassuming shop entitled “Nowhere Ltd.” He took his inspiration from what was closest to him: the streets, Japanese society, and, of course, Planet of the Apes. Nigo’s designs foreshadowed the urban hip-hop style that has come to prevail as a dominant youth fashion in Japan. But it was not merely his passion for collecting POTA memorabilia that led him to emboss his carefully crafted clothing with primates. The brand name is actually a clever riff on the Japanese society, as it is derived from the expression “to bathe in lukewarm water.”

Nigo explained his intentions in a recent interview with Metropolis, a Tokyo information magazine. “It’s a comment on kids in Tokyo today. They’re very shallow; they take things for granted, and they’re not street savvy. It’s sort of ironic for them to be wearing my clothing. I’m trying to show how they are incapable of being independent-minded. They have no plans, no goals, because they’re just too comfortable. Like bathing in lukewarm water.”

Not one to bathe in lukewarm water himself, Nigo has grown his brand far beyond the walls of his backstreet clothing shop. BAPE is not just a clothing line but a chain of stores extending to Hong Kong, London, and soon New York, a hair salon, a gallery, the café, a record label, and finally, the limited edition (of course!) BAPE Pepsi can.

The collaboration between BAPE and Pepsi will hopefully act as a stepping stone for the export of Japanese pop culture. While Japan has always trickled a steady, if narrow stream of high-brow luminaries such as musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, designer Issey Miyake, and filmmaker Nagisa Oshima, Japanese pop culture has consistently failed to make much if any noise on the global stage. But now with the BAPE Pepsi can and artist Takashi Murakami’s bold redesign of the classic Louis Vuitton handbag things may be starting to change. If BAPE’s latest co-branding exercise with adidas (launched last month) is any sign, the changes are already underway.

In many respects BAPE’s success shares parallels with Apple’s storied survival. Apple remains in the game with intensely focused branding efforts, targeting niche markets that expect something a little different. Each additional product in Apple’s line relates to its focus on creativity. Likewise, the inspiration behind each new BAPE brand extension links back to, well, the creative interests of Nigo. Designing a limited edition set of Beastie Boys action figures was a natural extension of Nigo’s long-standing friendship with the goof-fathers of hip hop. Cutting an album on his Ape Sounds label segues well with his fashion exploits and recalls his earlier days as a drummer with a punk band called the Tokyo Sex Pistols. And his hair salon is a logical step in creating a total BAPE style experience, elevating BAPE from mere a clothing brand to a “lifestyle” brand.

But the parallels between Apple and BAPE do not end there. For some, both brands exemplify the triumph of style over content. The worlds of Japanese art and commercial design since the Meiji Restoration have often appropriated ideas, styles, and techniques from the West, recombining them in unexpected ways. Often this process is taken to such an extreme that the result amounts to little more than cut and paste madness. Little concern often seems to have been given to thematic development and the relation among parts of works as a whole. The Mickey Mouse-on-acid designs of Murakami are a perfect example of this, as are the schizophrenic genre splicing of music artists Cornelius and the Boredoms. Nigo, it could be said, also falls prey to these criticisms.

But wait. Isn’t this affected haphazardness the perfect metaphor for the Internet age, which boasts torrential excesses of unrelated, disorganized information? Isn’t the lack of a coherent message an ironic reflection on the dissolution of the “authentic individual” in a world of PR smoke and media mirrors?

Nigo, with his ironic take on the consumers he clothes, feeds, and entertains, seems to be leaning in this direction. Clearly, the BAPE brand is part of a new generation of designers and artists that are increasingly comfortable conflating business and art. Like it or not, BAPE is a brand that plays by the rules to perfection, and if an empty signifier, is surely more aware of this than most of its loyal customers.

When you genuinely favour the programme of God on earth, you become a candidate of his favour in the world. When you truly favour the programme of God on earth, you become an automatic favour in the world.

The favour of God has to be entreated with gift. In psalm 35:27, let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause; let them say continually, let the Lord be magnified which hath pleasure in the prosperity of His servant.

The purpose of true riches is to build the kingdom of God. When purpose is not understood, abuse is inevitable. He said “My kingdom through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad” Zechariah 1:17.

God’s silver and gold is for building the latter house. Until you understand that purpose and embrace it, you are not a candidate for the end-time prosperity.

The silver is mine and the gold is mine, my silver and gold is build the latter house and make it glorious when you understand that, then He can entrust true riches into your hand.

There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face

Went by someone's blog today and saw the name "Enid Blyton". I know that name from some place in my past when I was less than 5 feet tall. Who is Enid Blyton? Where from that name? A quick GoogleWikipedia search and Voila, there she is!! I say GoogleWikipedia because the unknowns invariably lead you to Wikipedia. Maybe I should just get a Wikipedia toolbar already.

Anyway, the name reminded me of how long I've had the penchant for reading. I think I was introduced to the Hardy Boys around the same time I discovered Jackie Collins, Mario Puzo, Charles Dickens, Sidney Sheldon and Danielle Steel. Someone say bad cocktail of literature. I used to find Sidney Sheldon and Nora Roberts books absolutely riveting. I'd like to say I started with the Bible but at age 10 the literature that interested me was Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Greek Mythology, Shakespeare, R.L Stine, Agatha Christie and Tintin. I vaguely remember Marlon Crentsil and Opuni Kofi as being my competition when it came to who would get to steal whose book to read it. Good times.lol

My mom read Shakespeare in high school and you would hear her reciting phrases like 'There's no art to find the mind's construction in the face'. Looking back it's no wonder that the girl I spent the most time liking in highschool and college is an author of two books and I'm in charge of Copywriting in an Ad agency. Go figure!!

It's been a nostalgic afternoon but it's also dawned on me how reading all of Sidney Sheldon's books before 18 and trying to memorize Macbeth at 15 is of no relevance to me now. The books sprinkled some cultural insight but added no colour to my spirit. For example, when have you ever had problems with work, a girlfriend, addiction or your health and found a single line in any mundane book that could solve all your problems permanently? That's part of the reason I don't listen to hiphop or hiplife anymore. God forbid you ever become ill,in debt or depressed but if you do, trust me, you'll never find anything in Kanye's lyrics that will pay your bills or make your life whole. Emphasis on WHOLE, not the feel good factor you can get from emotionally uplifting beats and rhythms.

I'll end this with a quote I heard from a Christian brother, 'Your life is a photograph of everything you've listened to, watched and spoken. If you don't like where you are now, change what you're listening to, what you're watching and most importantly WHAT YOU SAY!!

Faith Is Based on Bible Facts, Not Theories By Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin

Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.(1Peter2:24)

Faith is built on fact, not theory. A fact is a conclusion deduced from evidence. (My definition of a theory is a supposition established on ignorance of the subject under discussion!) Faith is based on the facts of God's Word, but theory about God's Word is based on suppositions.

It is a Bible fact that by Jesus' stripes, we were healed (1 Peter 2:24). It is a Bible fact that surely He has borne our sicknesses and carried our pains (Is. 53:4). It is a Bible fact that Himself took our infirmities and bare our sicknesses (Matt. 8:17).

These are Bible facts, not theories.

Start believing these facts - even while you still have the symptoms. Although your body may be telling you that you are not healed, continue to believe the facts of God's Word. I know it works. It has worked for me.

Confession I believe the facts of God's Word. I believe that by Jesus' stripes, I am healed. I am not going to be healed, because I am healed now.

Love Unconditional

Unconditional Love according to 1cor13 is love that is proactive. It's love that says I'll treat you the same whether you're good to me or not.
If you shower me with love it will be easier to be good to you. If you are mean to me, it's easier to blame you for whatever rude words I utter to you.
Unconditional love is Agape. It's not an emotional release.

Has nothing to do with how I feel about you or what I think about what you have done-good or badUnconditional love will treat good and bad people the same.It does not matter if the person is black, white or panda. Unconditional love is not partial.

You don't have to be around a person who hurts you to Love them. You can love and pray for them from a distance.
The Love of God in you is bigger than everything that could ever happen to you.
Love never fails.

Was skipping through Dan Ariely's behavioural economics dictation titled The Upside of Irrationality. He reiterates the importance of customer service and as someone so aptly put it, "one fool(employee) throwing a stone will become a celebrity and cause your customers to become terrorists."(paraphrased). Anyway, Dan Ariely mentions an instance where Tom Farmer and Shane Atchison of Seattle, Washington decide to tell the world about a bad experience they had at a certain hotel. I'm reading a powerpoint of this discourse and it's not pretty.

Learning to walk in love is the most important thing we'll ever do in the area of faith. Everything we need to know about faith is found in Mark chapter 11. 22-25
22 And Jesus saith unto them, Have faith in God.

23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.

24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

25 AND when ye stand praying, FORGIVE, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.

We are quick to quote Mark 11: 23 and 24, but did you ever stop to think that Mark 11:25 goes right along with them? Verse 25 begins with the word "and," a conjunction. In other words, verse 25 joins what Jesus is about to say with what He just said. "AND when you stand praying..." He is still talking about praying in faith, just as He was in verse 24. And what are we to do as we pray? "Forgive, if ye have ought against any."

Unforgiveness is the main reason why faith doesn't work and why people fail to receive healing. Many know it is wrong to hold something big against someone, but they say it doesn't hurt if you hold just a little something against someone.

This verse says, "And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have OUGHT against any..." (Mark 11:25). Did you ever look up the word "ought" in the dictionary? It means anything at all... little, big, or middle-sized! An Old Testament verse says, "The LITTLE foxes spoil the vines" (Song of Solomon 2:15). So many times, it's not the big things in Christians' lives that keep their faith from working and their prayers from being heard. Rather , it's the little things ...just a little "ought."

6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; BUT FAITH WHICH WORKETH BY LOVE.

Faith works by love. If there is no love, faith won't work. And forgiveness has to do with love, God loved us and forgave us. Did He forgive us because we deserved it? No. He forgave us because He loved us. In Ephesians chapter 4 we read, "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you"(v32).

Have no ill will or unforgiveness toward anyone. Your faith will work when you walk in love!

I received this daily devotional about seeking more than just mental knowledge of God and I was greatly blessed by the widow's story.I believe in relating to our Heavenly Father as who you need Him to be.He is all things to His children so let Him be your deliverer,healer,billpayer,boyfriend,girlfriend,spouse,financier,teacher,strengthener,teacher,director,counsellor.etc.
If you had someone who was all of the above and more to you.Would you need anything/anyone else?

I know a widow who got hold of that kind of revelation one afternoon. She'd been meditating in the scriptures that say if you're a widow, God Almighty has taken His place as your provider and leader of your household.
She'd been feeling a little sorry for herself up until then. But when she received the revelation that God was actually head of her household now, she started talking to Him like she would a husband. "I'm telling You, Lord, the plumbing in this house is pitiful. Will You please get it fixed?" she said. From that moment on, she never had any more trouble with her plumbing. If you need something from God, determine right now that you're going to do what that widow did. Determine that you're going to meditate the Word until you get a revelation like that. Keep that Word before you until you receive a revelation of Jesus as your healer or your deliverer or your financier--whatever you need Him to be. Don't settle for a shallow mental understanding of Him. Get a deep revelation and His grace will be multiplied to you.

R.W Schambach told a story of a man who was in a coma sometime ago. A priest dressed in black came and spoke to the nurses about his condition and they started making plans for his death. After the black-clad priest left,another priest dressed in splendid white walked through the walls and spoke into the man's ears "You don't have any trouble,All you need is Faith in God". The man rose up miraculously from his bed and went to the restroom to shave. A nurse came in and said to him "please get back into bed you're going to die". PEPSI "refreshes your world" with this ad. It's pretty neat but I think the soundtrack could have been better. I especially like the end of the ad.

Although the Louis Vuitton Ad has three of the best footballers ever to play the game, I think the print version sells the brand better. You could watch this ad ten times and not be compelled to buy a Louis Vuitton bag. The print version shows the bags on the bottom right corner.

Any public figure who openely announces his love for Jesus Christ is okay in my book. Just commented on Nate Robinson's continuous mentioning of God's name whenever he's interviewed. May God bless all of these famous saints.
I've always liked Kaka's sporting ability so after I found out he was Christian and not ashamed to rep our Lord,I had to put this post here verbatim..

Kaka, my dear brother in the faith of Jesus Christ, I too belong to Jesus Christ. He changed my life, put my feet on solid ground and gave me the peace that passess all understanding.

Anyway I'm shopping online for dress shirts at Savillerow and T.M.Lewin and I noticed they have nifty how-to videos with everything from How-to make a silk knot to How-to iron a shirt in 3 minutes.
I think it's a really good idea whenever a clothing company juxtaposes a face or two next to their brand. Johnny Cupcakes has done this really well.
Dress shirts like any other inanimate object that is marketed with personality will inevitably produce some good sales.

Listened the audiobook about a year ago and it fueled my interest in behavioural economics.(notice how Dan Ariely's Predictably Irrational and Blogger's logo have the same colour scheme?conspiracy!!!lol)

Spent an afternoon with my neighbour,friend and the diva behind the Diva Delicious line of bags that a lot of people seem to be sporting nowadays.(drumroll):Sandy Owusu
We had a hearty talk about bringing creativity to life,branding,marketing,Goshen Givers and basically how to fuse our God-given talents with empowering the average Ghanaian entrepeneur.

Went by the Mary Louise Children's Hospital with my friends Kwabena Fitih and Leslie Narh today. Distributed about a hundred baby clothes to mothers and their kids. Was also able to pray for some of the kids. Interestingly, even the muslim parents did not object to laying hands on their children.

Thanks to Aunt Betty of Fire Generation Christian Fellowship Church,Denver for the baby clothes. The blessings of God be upon her.

The whole excercise took under two hours but I probably sweat more than Michael Essien in a Champions league match.lol. I reckon we'll photoshop the sweat under my armpits for the website.lol

Later on that evening met up with Pastor Amponsah at the football park near Christian village at West Legon.

The first time I met him was when Margaret Danquah invited me to come help her evangelize to some kids in August 2009. It was a beautiful experience.

Pastor Amponsah has been able to convince about eighty teenagers who live in the Anumle-Kisseman area to come and fellowship with him at the local football park two to three times a week.

I got there after eight p.m to see young kids in a circle praying in tongues and listening to the Word of God.

Goshen Givers has decided to pay for the school fees of three of these kids namely Roland,Serwaa and Bridgette.

Pastor Amponsah explained their dire financial status doesn't even allow them to be able to afford a measly 20ghc sometimes for basic provisions.

I'll upload the pictures I took that night when I find them.

Found out that they pay an average of 750ghc($500) a year for school fees. By God's grace and provision we'll sort them out with more than just school fees in the near future.
